The Washington Family Picture in Antique Frame

c. 1860, Washington Family Print, Published by John Damty, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 8" x 10", print entitled, “Washington Family,” engraved by A.B. Walter and based on the painting by F.B. Schell. Engraving shows the family later in life, perhaps during the years of Washington’s presidency. When George and Martha met, many years before the Revolutionary War, Martha was a widow with two children from her marriage to Daniel Parke Custis. In 1773, Martha’s daughter, Martha Parke Custis, passed away at the age of 17. Martha’s son, John Parke Custis, was killed at the age of 26, while serving as an aide to Washington during the siege of Yorktown in 1781. George and Martha had no children of their own, but John Parke Custis had four, and after his death Washington adopted the youngest two, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, whose daughter married Robert E. Lee. This print features George and Martha seated at a table with their two adopted grandchildren standing beside them. The frame have sustained some damage over the years - cracks, chips etc, but they are still in good enough condition to hang. The backings are thin pieces of wood, which have warped and cracked slightly of the years. If more pictures are needed Please email.
